My son was 2.5 years when his younger brother was stillborn last year. It was devastating for each of us. We worried that this would ‘ruin’ his life by its enormous impact on our family. But it didn’t. He, like us felt his feelings, expressed himself, had good and bad days and we are all still coping with it. I’m again pregnant and was initially tempted to keep it from him (now 3.5years) but thankfully didn’t. Even if the worst possible thing will happen, like stillbirth or neonatal death children being included in that is so important. It prevents them being left confused and shocked if something bad should happen. It gives them context, their story to understand. And it’s through his excitement and joy at a new baby that I’ve been able to find some excitement too in all the worry and anxiety.

This is so helpful. My husband and I have noticed our 3 year old responds well to bibliotherapy. Wondering if you have any recommendations for childrens books about babies/siblings that may help further prepare him and give him the opportunity to speak with us about the topic more frequently. It looks like there are quite a few out there, but I worry they may put too much emphasis/pressure on him for the responsibility of being a good big brother!
Thank you!

I’d like to use your advice to help my 3.5 yr old as my husband changes his job which will mean definitely moving house and possibly moving countries.

My husband has been unhappy in his job for the past few months and while we try to save most conversations until we are on our own, somethings are talked about that he can hear and I can see from his behaviors that he feels the stress we are feeling.

The problem is at the moment we don’t have the specifics, so do we wait until my husband has secured a job or begin the preparation now that there will be some changes this summer?

Thanks again,
Vivian
