Thanks! My kids are 6,and 2 year old twins. Unruffled is… always the goal.

Loved this time to listen to you all so much – thank you. Madeline and Charlotte, thank you for taking your time and for your respectful and honest answers. Those were some pretty personal questions and your sharing was intelligent and thoughtful (hope it is okay to say that).
Janet, i have learned so much from you over the years (my kids are 21 and 25) and even though i definitely did not use to RIE/calm approach for probably the ‘middle’ 15 years, i do now, and calibration is an amazing thing! Our relationships, like your own, are beautiful and we all cherish them. Something just clicked one day and i stopped taking their feelings personally; maintained kind of a detached interest with love and sincerity (and respect). It did not take long for both kids to trust me more and for me to trust me more.
I guess what i am trying to say is that even though some times i was a yelling mess and possibly having my own meltdown (trying to ‘make sense’ out of my kids’ frustrations and fix everything for them – so codependent was i), even though i was far from what they needed at the time, i think that i am now, and i am so very grateful for that; so grateful.
Blessings on your work Janet!
Love, judi

It is also hugely useful to hear more how this approach looked in their post-toddler years. There were a few things that I, personally, would love to hear more on. As children get older this approach feels harder, limiting TV, their reactions, questions to limits and outside pressures.

In particular, when it came to school and homework, did you as parents not get involved at all? I would love to know if you ever mentioned homework? If the school had asked you to work on something with them, would you have?

Many thanks again!

Thank you so much, Deborah! I can’t take credit for the idea, but I was brimming with gratitude when I heard my daughters’ sharing. We are very well and hope you and your adorable brood are too! Miss you!

Bence – you are so kind to listen and comment. Your approval means a lot. I was amazed and proud that without any prompting, Charlotte and Madeline echoed so many of your mother’s teachings. I still hear her voice in my head and it comforts and guides me.

Clearly they were privileged, having been raised by uniquely qualified parents.
Their comments about feelings and the implicit permission to have feelings are a true testament to the modeling they experienced.
Talk about feelings, I had a number of “near tear” moments.
I am so happy to see that you can continue to share your wisdom in this “lock down” environment.
